Review Horse Magazine April 2006

Many of us will have encountered a bitting dilemma with our Horses at some point, and with it quite possibly some confusion as to which would suit the horse best. This DVD is presented by renowned author, riding instructor and Myler bitting Clinician Hilary Vernon, and is designed to set viewers on the road towards comprehension.

If you are seeking a rapid solution to a specific bitting problem, then this would probably not be your first port of call. However, if you are wanting to learn more about the various factors that should come into play when choosing bits in general, and how individual bits sit in Horses mouths, then you should certainly pop this into your DVD player.

Part of the reason that the DVD makes a potentially dull subject so watchable is the excellent animation from Fat Cat Studios. These enable viewers to understand the impact that bitting choice has on the Horse, and to see bits in situ.'

The fact that Hilary is an avocate of Myler bits does not exert a big influence on the content - Mylers Comfort Snaffle is used as one example in a selection of basic bits, but this is no advertising video. In fact the only thing it promotes is the value in getting your bitting choices right, and understanding the impact they will have on your Horse. This is such an important subject area that I found myself genuinely enthralled throughout. I await the next instalment with bated breath.

Video and DVD reviews:
A DVD on Bitting sounds about as interesting as a station announcement and watching it is reminiscent of GCSE biology class without the frogs - but wait. Quickly, the teeth floating in darkness become intriguing and the clear explanations of their wear and need for care is enlightening. Hilary Vernon provides gems of information about where to look before assuming you horse has a bitting problem, plus sound advice if you decide he would benefit from a different bit. And refreshingly, this DVD is not a hard sell on a particular brand of bit.
